When 1 mule was added, they were able to divide the mules among themselves because 18 is divisible by 2, 3, and 9. But 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/9 is not equal to 1 but rather 17/18. And 17/18 * 18 = 17. That's why they only got 17 mules in all.

Here's my 2nd attempt to solve the insurance salesman problem. Since the salesman knew that the product of the owner's children's ages was 36 and he also probably knew the house number since he was there, he would have easily solved the problem. However, there are 2 possible answers that yield the same house number - both 9-2-2 and 6-6-1 have the sum of 13. That must be the reason why he asked for additional information. And since there's an 'eldest' whom the owner claims to play the violin, the answer would be 9-2-2.

I think the answer to the insurance salesman problem would be 2-3-6. There were only three possible answers (3-3-4, 2-3-6, and 2-2-9). I assumed the answers would have to be natural numbers since they add up to be the house number. The other choices would have to mean that the house owner had twins, but he thought that knowing the eldest plays the violin suffices as an information to answer the question, then my guess must be correct.

Dear John sorry this is the only means that I could find to contact you, I am a sixth form student currently studying A-level physics and I am currently researching a project on mechanical resonance in buildings I was wondering if you could help me a little on some of the more technical points.Most of my work is about seismic and wind loading of tall buildings but I would be interested if there are any other areas you think I should look into. Dear Prof. John F. Claydon, I am currently teaching Water Supply Engineering and Hydrology to the 5th and 3rd year students respectively in Kabul University, Afghanistan. For improving my teaching of Water Supply I was searching for simple, practical and useful information to share with my students as due to the past two decades of disturbance we have lost all our teaching material and libraries, however, we have done a lot of rehabilitation during the past few years. By chance I visited your site, and I found the material extremely useful and practical, in general, and in particular I found the part on Lab Experiments relevant to water supply engineering. I noticed pictures of apparatus used in carrying all those experiments and found them informative. I wish to get a chance to find an opportunity to conduct all the experiments mentioned in your website to refresh my knowledge of all the experiments that we used to carry some of them in the 80s.
